Original title: Tacir, Sermaye ve Güvenlik: Doğu Akdeniz Koruma Pratiklerinden Tam Koruma ve Güvenlik Standardına
This book is the expanded, stand-alone version of the historical study that was removed from the author's doctoral dissertation. Drawing on Scelle's bio-sociological theory and Schwarzenberger's inductive method, it traces the full protection and security standard through 11th-century Anatolian Seljuk documents, Venetian–Menteşe agreements, Ottoman ahidnames and 19th-century gunboat diplomacy.
The book argues that international investment law did not begin in the 19th century, as the Eurocentric literature has it, but has much earlier roots in the Eastern Mediterranean: in Seljuk–Venetian trade, Ottoman ahidnames and lex mercatoria practice. Its second part analyses Türkiye's 117 bilateral investment treaties with an eight-category coding system, a contribution not contained in the dissertation.
